UI non-academic staff unions suspend strike

the Director of Public Communication , University of Ibadan , Mr . Olatunji Oladejo , has said that the non -academic staff unions of the university have agreed to suspend their week - long strike after a series of meetings with the school management .
The suspension of the strike came as the students of the university said that since the commencement of the strike , they ( students ) had been living under difficult conditions on the campus as sources of water and electricity had been switched off by the striking staff .
Academic and administrative activities at the university had come to a halt on March 20 , 2017 , when the staff declared an indefinite strike because of what the union described as illegal deductions of pension money from the salaries of its staff .
The workers are also asking for their unpaid promotion arrears , shortfall in salary payment , and improvement in welfare, among other issues .
Effort to speak with the chairman of the university branch of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities , Wale Akinremi , by our correspondent proved abortive as he did not pick his call when our correspondent called his line .
However , Oladejo said administrative and academic activities in the school would resume on Tuesday (today ) .
“ After a series of meetings with the leaders of the unions by the representatives of the university’ s authority, the unions agreed to suspend the strike and resume work on Tuesday , ” said Oladejo , who did not give further details of how a deal was struck between the two parties
