38 Nigerian Universities increase tuition fees, say Buhari’s govt made them poorer – ASUU

No fewer than 38 universities across the country have increased their tuition fees as a result of poor funding by the Federal and State governments.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr. Deji Omole, made this known in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Monday.
The statement which assessed the two years of President Muhammadu Buhari in office, lamented that the current government had made Nigerians poorer.
Omole said that the public education was not taken seriously because most children of the rich and those in high offices do not attend school in Nigeria.
“The latest increment might be attributed to poor funding by the federal and state governments as ASUU poorly rated the President Muhammadu Buhari in the area of funding of university education.
ASUU also noted that it would be difficult for any Nigeria university to effectively compete globally with the inadequate allocation of budgetary funding as prescribed by UNESCO to fund education.

What Nigerian Youth Need to Succeed

The Founder of Ajayi Polytechnic, Ikere Ekiti , in Ekiti State , Dr . Busayo Ajayi, has called on youths and graduates in the country to embrace entrepreneurship .
He also stressed the need for the country to imbibe the global modern ways of running businesses through Information and Communication Technology .
Ajayi spoke during the institution ’ s maiden inaugural lecture themed, , in Ado Ekiti .
The Director of Learning in the institution , Mr . Tolu Fagbola , said the lecture was to help the students to know the practical realities of businesses and entrepreneurship skills through the ICT as a major factor in how businesses thrive globally .
“ In doing business in today ’ s world , we have moved away from the traditional way characterised by trade by barter over a thousand years ago to the new age of internet - enabled businesses . ”
Ajayi lamented that most Nigerian youths and graduates were jobless and unemployable because they lacked the necessary skills and training .
He said the polytechnic was a platform designed to equip them with the required entrepreneurial skills to set up businesses of their own .
Ajayi added that the most important skill needed by the youths of this generation was to be self - reliant and vast in the knowledge of the ICT .
He said , “Innovation , being proactive and ability to take risks are some of the characteristics of the entrepreneurship which the youths must develop . It has to do with creating businesses and becoming an employer of labour in the larger business world but within an organisation it is called entrepreneurship .
“ Apart from creating businesses and being employable through the entrepreneurial training , the ICT knowledge will help them to secure jobs in other countries while in Nigeria because we are now in global world . ”
He revealed that the institution was in partnership with Samsung and the British Computer Society to enhance its training scope and confer international recognition on the institution and its graduates .

UI worried over half-baked graduates

The Dean of Postgraduate School , University of Ibadan , Prof . Jonathan Babalola , has said that there is evidence that many graduates of various universities in the country lack proper knowledge of the subject they claim to have studied .
Babalola , who spoke at the CARTA Graduate Advanced Seminar , organised for doctoral students of the university’ s Faculty of the Social Sciences , said the trend had reached an alarming height, while also calling on universities in Nigeria to take drastic measures to address the academic deficit .
According to Babalola , evidence has exposed many postgraduate students ’ inadequate knowledge in their areas of specialisation , adding that many of them found it difficult to even defend the research projects they claimed to have conducted before their certificates were awarded.
The don explained that the UI postgraduate school had set up a committee to organise pseudo courses that would target certain students in order to guide and tutor them on what to do in their areas of specialisation .
The Director , Office of International Programmes , UI , Prof . Oluwatoyin Odeku , called on students to apply for international grants and scholarship so as to attain global scholar status , adding that the university treasured internationalisation of its students through exposures to global scholarships .
Also speaking at the event , the Dean of the Faculty of the Social Sciences , Prof . Ayodele Jegede , noted that the seminar was organised for enhanced capacity building for doctoral students .
He said that Nigeria needed well -equipped researchers to solve many of the social challenges facing the country. According to him , looking up to people who do not have the skills to generate data and analyse them will add to the nation’ s problem and compound its challenges

The Ondo State Government has said that it has started the process of upgrading the Ondo State School of Nursing and Midwifery to a degree -awarding institution .
The government also said it was committed to ensuring that quality nursing education was provided in the state - owned nursing institution .
The Permanent Secretary, Ondo State Ministry of Health , Dr . Taye Oni , stated this while speaking during the matriculation ceremony of 50 student midwives in the Ondo State School of Midwifery, Akure , the state capital .
He noted that there had been a paradigm shift in nursing education in Nigeria .
He said , “ Schools of nursing and midwifery are fast becoming degree -awarding institutions or monotechnics.
“ To this end, the Ondo State Government is doing a lot to transform the school and the rate of transformation would be more rapid . ”
He urged the matriculating students to work hard in order to achieve excellent performance , urging them not to allow distractions in the course of their study in the institution .
In her remarks , the Principal of the school , Mrs. Bridget Oladele , advised the new students to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations of the institution .

Man sentenced to Jail for involvement in Admission Manipulation

Choi Soon - sil , the friend of South Korea ’ s former president Park Geun -hye who was impeached in March , was last week sentenced to three years in prison for soliciting university favours for her daughter .
The Seoul Central District Court on Friday found Choi guilty of ‘ obstruction of duty’ by exerting influence on Ewha Womans University to give undue favours to her 21 - year - old daughter, Chung Yoo -ra , using her ties with the former president , South Korea ’ s news agency Yonhap reported .
The court said Choi ignored the law and procedures for her daughter’ s university admission , and took it for granted that others should help her achieve this purpose . She committed “ so many illegal activities” while pressuring Ewha Womans University to grant admission and then give her daughter good grades despite a poor attendance record at Ewha .
The prosecution in May demanded a seven - year jail term , but this is just the first of a number of corruption charges against Choi that is being heard in the courts .
Choi pleaded not guilty to the indictment , arguing that she never asked for special treatment for her daughter.
Chung’ s university place and her high school diploma have already been revoked , following an official investigation which found that her high school attendance and test grades had been forged .
The Seoul court also sentenced Choi Kyung- hee , the former president of the university who was forced to resign last October over the scandal, and Namkung Gon , the university’ s former head of admissions , who were both found to have complied with Choi Soon - sil ’ s requests to admit her daughter. They were sentenced to two years and 18 months in prison, respectively , on the same charges as Choi Soon - sil .
The court said evidence proved “ top -down collusion ” between Choi Soon -sil , South Korea ’ s former vice- minister for culture Kim Chong, and former Ewha Womans University president Choi Kyung- hee , which led to an “ unfair instruction ” to admit Choi Soon - sil ’ s daughter Chung Yoo - ra .
Chung, an equestrian , was admitted by the university based on her sporting achievements, but a government investigation found that the university had changed its rules on sports to benefit Chung.

85,000 candidates to write supplementary UTME on July 1 -JAMB

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has urged GCE candidates to endeavour to collect their certificates within four years of writing the examination as any delay beyond that will attract custody fee.
Demianus Ojijeogu, the Head of Public Affairs Department, WAEC, Nigeria disclosed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.
The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, commonly referred to as WAEC GCE, is usually taken in November/December every year.
Mr. Ojijeogu said: “the normal charge for the certificate is N3, 500 and only payable by those whose certificates were issued between zero and four years.
“But from five to nine years is N8, 500; 10 to 14 years N13, 500; 15 to 19 years N18, 500 while 20
years and above will be charged N23, 500.
“These charges are (for) custody fee; for keeping the certificates for so long because it occupies space in our office. It will also serve as a deterrent to others.
“I don’t know the reason why people will sit for exams and their certificates are ready yet they will not come for collection. What was the essence of the certificate in the first place?’’
He also said that requirements for collection of the GCE certificates within Nigeria were an application letter, sworn affidavit from the High Court, online result print- out, one passport-size photograph, photo card and identity card.
